Beginning to Intermediate Handbuilding Skills

Adult Multi-Week Class for Beginner and Intermediate Students

Thursdays 5:30-8:30 pm | April 23- May 21

This multi-week ceramics class is designed to guide students through the full process of creating functional serving ware, from concept to finished glazed pieces. In Week One, students are introduced to the studio through an orientation covering best practices, equipment demos, and studio guidelines, followed by time to sketch ideas and plan their projects. The first form—a small handled serving bowl—is started with step-by-step demonstrations. In Week Two, students refine their initial pieces, explore surface design through carving, and begin larger projects including a textured serving bowl and a platter or tray, with demos on techniques like sgraffito and stamping. Week Three focuses on refining forms, preparing fired pieces through wet sanding, and introducing glazing with a live demonstration. In Weeks Four and Five, students complete the glazing process for all projects and begin collecting finished work, culminating in a group discussion and critique to reflect on the process and identify future creative directions.

All materials and tools are provided.

MEET Erin

Originally hailing from northern Vermont, Erin’s pottery journey started in 1994 when she took her very first hand building class in college. A life-long student, she has since explored so much about the medium of ceramics and is always amazed by how much more there is yet to discover. After a rewarding career supporting research at UC Berkeley, she moved to Bend, OR in 2020 and was thrilled to have the chance to return to doing pottery once more. Over the past several years, she has devoted much of her pottery practice to the world of hand building, and is delighted to share what she has learned.
